I began volunteering at school, when I joined our Interact Club (Junior Rotary in school). We worked on many community projects and in my final year, I became President of our Interact Club. "Service above self" is the motto of Rotary International and growing up in South Africa under the discriminating Apartheid regime, there were plenty opportunities to help those less fortunate than myself. To get experience in VO, I volunteered for the Royal National Institute for the Blind, and loved reading magazines and newspapers every week.

After having experienced the good work of Rotary International as a Rotary Exchange Student to New Mexico, USA in 1991, and their service worldwide in promoting peace and understanding and fostering good relationships globally, I wanted to contribute to my local Rotary Club and started attending Putney Rotary Club, and was invited to join in September 2018.

Putney Rotary Club works in the borough of Wandsworth, London, creating and participating in a number of local projects to benefit local charities, schools and community organisations. We also do International projects, most notably whilst I was President, our club was involved in co-ordinating the UK/Beirut fundraising campaign across the UK contributing USD$141k to a Global Grant of USD$391k to re-equip the Paediatric and Neonatal Operating Theatre and Paediatric wing of Karantina State Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon, supporting president Habib Saba of Rotary Club of Beirut Cosmopolitan. Louise was given a Paul Harris Award by RCBC. At the District 1130 Foundation Awards 2021, Foundation Chair Robert Morris awarded Lu the Surya Varsani Trophy, "given each year for an outstanding contribution to Foundation by a Rotarian or club in our District.  This year we chose to recognise the amazing work you personally put in to the hospital project and Grant."

As we're all volunteers, 100% of charitable donations go directly to our projects (no staff expenses to pay). If you're interested in joining Rotary, please reach out, I'd love to chat to you about the amazing work of this global organisation, made up of 1.2 million members worldwide, spanning over 200 countries and geographical areas. ROYAL NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR THE BLIND, UK

I started out in my Voice Over career by volunteering for RNIB, which was such fun. I worked with lovely people and read some fascinating magazines I would never normally pick up.

Reading newspapers weekly and keeping up to speed on the news was great - reading ranged from Private Eye and The Independent, Football League Paper to The Railway Magazine!
